Cattle Drive of the Century

Cattle Drive Pictures

May 9-12, 2012

As New Mexico celebrates 100 years of statehood—1912-2012—many celebrations are being planned throughout the state. Lea and Eddy Counties, in the southeastern corner of New Mexico, have partnered for a unique event, “Cattle Drive of the Century.” One hundred head of longhorn cattle will be driven from the Pitchfork Ranch in Lea County to the Eddy County Sheriff’s Posse Arena, some 60 miles away.  The cattle, which are branded with a special “Centennial Brand,” will be offered to the highest bidders at an old-fashioned livestock auction, at the “end of the trail,” on May 12.

Ways to Participate

  • Dude Ranch Experience – 50 spots are reserved for those who want to “ride the range” but may not have their own horse. Arrangements are made through the Pitchfork Cattle Company. Anyone wishing to participate should be able to ride at least 15 miles per day on rough terrain. For more information, contact Bert Madera at www.pitchforkcattle.com.

  • City Slickers may join the cowboys each evening for a chuck wagon meal and a campfire sing-a-long. Recording artist Michael Martin Murphy will be featured along with other notable entertainers. Busses will depart from Hobbs and Carlsbad each night at 5:00 pm. Tickets are $75 each and can be purchased online at www.selectaseatlubbock.com.

Discounts are now available for the City Slickers when you buy as a group.  Tickets must be purchased by one person for the same date.  When checking out, use the following codes:

10-24 Tickets = $65.00/ticket (Group1)

25-49 Tickets = $60.00/ticket (Group2)

50 or more = $50.00/ticket (Group3)

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to conact the Lea County Event Center at 575-391-2900.

  • Wagon Train & Trail Riders Experience – Those members of the public who own their own horses, mules, and wagons can also participate. There are only 40 spots available and registration materials and payment must be received no later than April 27, 2012. The fee is set at $225/per person.  Click here for more information and registration:  Wagon Train.

  • End of the Trail – Carlsbad is planning a big celebration when the cattle arrive on May 12. Some of the plans include: a children’s rodeo, branding & leather working, wool spinning, buggy rides, pony rides, cow-chip throwing contests, and a chuck wagon cook-off, and the list goes on. There will be a concert Saturday evening in Carlsbad starring Michael Martin Murphy. Call the Walter Gerrels Center Performing Arts Center for ticketing information.

All participants must pre-register. No one will be admitted without the proper ticket.
