Cowboy Christmas Dance

December 8, 2007

Michael Hearne and South by Southwest was a delightful retreat from the bustle of Christmas. Sweet musical chords filtered through the dance floor as couples shared an evening of dancing and food.

Family Night at the Museum

December 4, 2007

The museum brought 200 visitors to enjoy cookies, hot chocolate, carolers, story corner, Cowboy Santa, and family photos. The event was surrounded by two movies: How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Polar Express.

Dr. Roy B. Blizzard, Jr. Lecture Series

November 14 - 15, 2007

The Western Heritage Museum Complex hosted Dr. Roy Blizzard, internationally recognized author and biblical archeologist, November 14, 2007. Blizzard's topic of discussion was "Intelligent Design and the Biblical Text." The next day Blizzard spoke at College of the Southwest on "Recent Discoveries in Biblical Archaeology."

Blizzard, who holds master's degrees from ENMU and the University of Texas as well as a doctorate in Hebrew Studies, is the founder and CEO of Bible Scholars, Inc., recently merged into the Biblical Research Foundation, dedicated to biblical research and education.

Boys and Girls Club / Steer Roping Finals

November 2, 2007

One hundred girls and boys toured the museum during the Steer Roping Finals. The children were selected to enjoy a taste of cowboy life by way of the rodeo.

Max Evans Film Festival

October 27, 2007

In conjunction with the Lea County Museum and the Jal Museum, three Max Evans movies were viewed by audiences. Max Evans was interviewed by Francis Levine, Director of the Museum of New Mexico, before the showing of the Rounders in the WHM Theater.

Tres Vidas

The lives of three legendary Latin women were dramatized and enhanced by superb musicians.

The Orphan Train Rides

October 11, 2007

Novelist Alison Moore and musician Phil Lancaster used their special brand of storytelling and songs to tell the plight of the orphans and unwanted children that were sent west to find new lives. NMJC students, teachers and community members were transported to 1854 through 1929 when our country placed these children on a westward train to relocate and rehabilitate them.

Staked Plains Roundup

September 20-21, 2007

Brice Chapman sparkled with his dog Sooner and Crossfire, his talented horse. The energy of this gracious cowboy continued over and over for his awed audiences. Children absorbed lessons on character as they watched Brice perform. Students played and learn about early life on the Staked Plains during two days of demonstrations presented by cowboys, artists, and awesome volunteers.

Hillary Smith Band

September 7, 2007

A full house enjoyed the soulful jazz of our home-town lady, Hillary Smith Urzetta. She brought along with her an awesome band with renowned music.
